Imagine the lakes, glacial valleys and mountains of Switzerland on a Himalayan scale and you have an image of Kashmir. Images merge with reality on this trek which takes you through some of the finest alpine country in the world. The trek follows the first eight days of our Kashmir Adventure, then continues beneath the snow-capped mountains of northern Kashmir, a region renowned for its emerald lakes, breathtaking mountain scenery and magnificent camp sites.
From Luxury stay in Mammar Tent Village we move to Sonmarg whereon our trail winds up through the silver birch forest and over to our first lakeside camp at Vishensar on Day 03 of the adventurous trek of Kashmir Great Lakes. We spend our days savouring the mountain panoramas and feasting on freshly caught trout by our adventure enthusiasts although we still offer you meals on the trek. From the pass above Vishensar (4300 m, 14,108 ft) we gain superb views of the gigantic Nanga Parbat massif, the world's seventh highest mountain well worth the climb in the crisp morning air.
We descend through flowered meadows that blossom into colour as summer matures, and meet hospitable Gujar shepherds whose flocks graze these mountain pastures. It is hard to imagine a more arcadian setting.
Finally, we climb the ridge above Gangabal Lake on Day 06 of our trek. Here it becomes easy to imagine why the early Hindu pilgrims believed this to be the most sacred site in Kashmir. To discover a perfect lake mirroring the image of Mt Haramukh (5,142 m/16,870 ft) is an awe-inspiring sight the same mountain peak from where. Mt Harmukh was first climbed by members of the Great Trigonometric Survey led by Thomas Montgomerie in 1856. Montgomerie made the first survey of the Karakoram some 210 km (130 miles) to the north, and sketched the two most prominent peaks, labelling them K1 and K2.
Finally, on Day 07 we return to Mammar in our Luxury tents and from there we continue our journey to Srinagar house boats where we explore the Lakeland beauty of the Vale of Kashmir. These impressions will remain with you long after you have returned home.
